The humorously inclined use the day to quiz their friends and acquaintances and together they give the postman an extraordinary amount of work to do in de livering the multitude of missives. Why the good, old. bishop, St. .Valentine, wlw suffered martyrdom 1,000 years ago, should have to stand godfather to ail the Valen tines which fly over the country on his day, is not wry clear ; but it is said by some that it is because he Was a man of very affectionate disposition, and that therefore-this day was chosen for the send ing of Valentines, which should be letters or gifts of a kindly and affectionate character. To this historic game tht Young America of Charlotte is now de vo:ing his undivided attention and bend ing all his energies, 'onseqnently, many tender mamas are binding np bruised shins and battered heads. To us the word "shin ny" has a peculiar significance. We were wont at one tiine, to play the game once a day ; beginning in the morning and quit ting at night. We have a vivid recollec tion of our last game. It was on a Satur day afternoon. A big boy hit the ball and the ball hit our eye. We laid down sud denly on our left wrist. Then the doctor came,-and we rested from onr labors for tvvo weeks. At the end of that time we went forth with oiie'arm. ina sling, and looked upon the beauties -f nature with one eye. From that Saturday afternoon up to the present time, "shinny" has nev er had its lormer attractions for this deponent. Ia Crcme de la Creme.
